RUSH HOUR: The stories you need to know today

#LightTheDark: tens of thousands gather across Australia over migration crisis

Pamela Curr, of the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, said such rallies would continue until the Australian government “opens its heart, opens its mind and opens the doors of Australia. We will keep coming out to fight, to light the dark until our

Migrant crisis: Why do we feel the need to keep refugees out at all costs?

Putting my cards on the table, my Hungarian Jewish Granny came out to Australia after the 1939 gritty WWI reboot, WWII (World War's Back and Now It's Personal). She came out on a boat (a boat person!), and her papers were It's a hard sprain to our

RUSH HOUR: The stories you need to know today -

You can get across the stories you need to know today below or go to news. Germany will spend around $9 billion to cope with the roughly 800,000 migrants and refugees expected to pour into the West European nation by the end of 2015, reports NBC News. Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel announced the pledge on Monday after authorities in Hungary relented and allowed large groups of migrants to make their way to Europe’s wealthiest country. “We had to give a strong signal of humanity to show that Europe’s values are valid also in difficult times. Hungary’s handling of the crisis is unbearable,” said Germany’s Secretary-General Yasmin Fahimi. Additionally, Germany announced that they will make it easier to deport refugees back to countries considered to be safe in order to offer asylum to those from war torn countries such as Syria. A nurse and two security guards have been injured in a mass family brawl after a fight broke out between relatives visiting a patient at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney. Riot police were called to the hospital on Sunday night after the melee broke out between 20 family members, reports Fairfax. “It will be alleged that a female nurse was assaulted and the man had to be removed by security personnel,” a spokesman said. “Security guards have been punched, one of them was kicked and sustained neck injuries and bruising,” HSU secretary Gerard Hayes said. Jon Hamm has split with his partner Jennifer Westfeldt after 18 years. “With great sadness, we have decided to separate, after 18 years of love and shared history,” the couple told NY Post in a joint statement. “We will continue to be supportive of each other in every way possible moving forward. Hamm, 44, and Wesfeldt, 45, made their last public appearance together on July 22 at the after-party for Netflix’s “Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp” in NYC where eyewitnesses said they were “canoodling all night. The Mad Men star struggled with alcohol addiction and completed rehab earlier this year, crediting Westfeldt as a supportive force during his treatment. Legalising ice could be the best way to fight the deadly drug epidemic sweeping through Australia, according to Geelong’s peak ice taskforce. The head of This Town’s Ice Fight, Senior Sergeant Tony Francis, said the concept of decriminalising ice was being explored by the group, reports the Geelong Advertiser. “The idea is so radical it might just work,” Sen-Sgt Francis said. “We need to have a proper debate about this, without the discussion being hijacked by self-interested groups. “Crime would drop big-time because people won’t need to go robbing and thieving from cars and the like to get money to pay dealers and get ice,” he said. China’s government has announced a move to “manage” dancing in public. A spate of noisy disputes between middle-aged women and nearby residents has prompted China’s communist leaders to step in and regulate dancing in public places, state media said Monday. Groups of dancers often gather on China’s public squares and street corners performing choreographed routines to loud music, sometimes provoking anger from neighbours. China will step up efforts to manage such dancers, creating a “public square dancing management mechanism” which will be “under government leadership”, the official Xinhua news agency reported. The auction is thought to be the first of its kind and is expected to fetch a $A15,000 price tag. Tony Abbott will call on parliament to fully support the trade deal his government has sealed with China. The prime minister will move a motion this afternoon asking the House of Representatives to note the enormous economic potential from the agreement and acknowledge that it must be passed by year’s end for Australian business to benefit. Labor has concerns about parts of the agreement it says would let Chinese businesses bring in cheaper workers at the expense of Australian jobs. Government whip Andrew Nikolic said the debate in parliament would give Labor leader Bill Shorten a chance to decide which face he wanted to.

Realism has become a dirty word in some social sciences, yet, despite fashionable new approaches involving multiple ontologies and the like, when anthropologists actually produce ethnographic accounts they are, still, indulging in realism in some form. Perhaps this is why ethnography, too, is unfashionable. Given the authors’ background as anthropologists committed to fieldwork, this book provides a theoretical grounding to justify and explain the sorts of accounts that anthropologists produce as the result of ethnographic research. The book’s approach starts from an acceptance that understanding is always incomplete, always improvable. This sort of partiality is viewed throughout the book as a strength. The challenge of anthropology is that it involves forms of translation: often...

Whitehaven beach on Whitsunday Island, Queensland Whitsunday Island is the largest of the Whitsunday islands and are named after Captain Cook’s Whitsunday Passage in 1770, which ironically took place on the Monday (there was an error in his time keeping!). Whitehaven Beach is a 7km strip of pure white sand, comprising 98% pure silica, situated on the east side of the island. The island is a protected site and has National Park status. The beach is only accessible by boat and nothing can be left behind after visiting. Over the years the beach has won multiple awards for its cleanness and beauty, and was determined the world’s top eco-friendly beach in 2010 by CNN.
