A different kind of life on the bayou - The Daily Advertiser

Source: www.theadvertiser.com

Since 1984, Bayou Vermilion District has beautified, conserved & managed sites along the Vermilion, preserving Lafayette Parish natural & cultural sources. This week’s column is dedicated to showcasing a day in the life of its bayou operations crew. Like any morning, members of the bayou operations team trickle in to the old white Acadian house that serves as their office on Fisher Road. They’re a portion of the crew that has been tasked with beautifying the Vermilion and improving its water quality. The retention pond facing their building is covered in a thick layer of fog. Someone starts up a pot of coffee, and the team gets down to business. They discuss plans for the day, which includes some maintenance work (cleaning the pond’s pump and closing off the Bandalong Litter Trap – two activities that are safe enough for the present weather conditions)and an afternoon of removing debris... FIND IT HERE: Lots more outdoor recreation news. The team leaves the office to start their day. Cleaning the retention pond’s pump might not sound so important in the grand scheme of things, foreman Tom Melancon tells me. But there’s a reason behind every menial task. Melancon, who has been working for BVD for almost 10 years now, is like a father-figure to the team. Although he’s worked in just about every role, he said he still learns every day. He was born and raised in Leonville, and worked in the past as a soy, corn and wheat farmer under his grandfather for 15 years before becoming a jeweler, and later starting as a bayou technician (“a trash picker,” Melancon jokes). The Bandalong is a system that floats in the Coulee Mine near the South College Bridge (one of the more problematic litter areas in Lafayette Parish). It traps litter before it floats into the Vermilion. At that point, its basket can be removed (using a grappler) and emptied. With so much rainfall, a large amount of litter flows into the river and the team must cut off the flow before the water recedes. Bayou Vermilion District employees in front of the Bandalong Litter Trap. From left to right, back row includes Marcus Orsot (bayou technician), Emile Ancelet (director of water quality), Greg Guidroz (director of environmental awareness), Chris Holland (bayou specialist). Front row includes Peter Durand (bayou technician), Tom Melancon (foreman) and Curtis Willingham (director of facilities maintenance). The team finds a stopping point to their work and heads back to land for lunch, often in Vermilionville’s on-site restaurant, La Cuisine de Maman, where they chat with fellow employees. It’s now time for the team to take to the river for debris removal, which can include anything from using picker to remove floating items like soda cans and Styrofoam containers to removing larger objects like tires and appliances using a grappler. Melancon’s partner is Lafayette native Chris Holland, a new father and an even newer graduate of the University of Louisiana’s Environmental Science program. Like Melancon, he came on as a bayou technician seven or eight years ago, but has since worked his way up to bayou specialist. “I’m really thankful for how flexible the team has been with my school schedule,” Holland said. When I’d have a 9 a. m. class, it would break up the day and affect my partner’s schedule, not just mine. ” Holland has learned a lot from Melancon – including how to repair the fleet’s engines. “Everybody here gets cross-trained,” Holland said. “I started in the front deck of the boat, then learned how to drive the boat, then learned how to drive the barge, and now I’m operating the grappler. OUTDOORS: 4 ways to gear up for an eco-friendly new year. The job can of course be dangerous at times, especially when doing chainsaw work – something that’s necessary for removing fallen trees blocking the Vermilion after a heavy rain. Holland joked that it’s about time do an inventory of the fleet’s first aid kit, which is routine for them (they are susceptible to spider and snake bites, scrapes, etc. But as Melancon said in seriousness, “Chainsaws do not forgive. The team is done for the day, and they return to the office to unload the boats and tidy them up for tomorrow’s work.

Build Electric Boat Motor

Invited by former Olympic sailor Alberto Sonino, Dick and Jem travel to Venice, Italy, to help save one of the world’s most beautiful cities from the damaging effect of boat pollution. With 40,000 boats commuting around Venice, exhaust from Europe’s largest car-free zone mixes with water and creates an acid that is eroding away the historic buildings’ precious facades. With a stunning U.S. $30,000 boat provided by Alberto, Dick and Jem get to work on creating an electric-powered motor. To power the engine using a clean power resource, Dick and Jem outfit the water taxi with solar panels that re-charge the motor’s batteries. To test the design, Alberto creates a marathon course that will take at least two hours, encountering open water, bridges, tight canals, traffic and a meeting with the head of Venice’s waterways. Satisfied with the result, Dick and Jem next challenge themselves to build an electric speed boat, using a specialized go-kart motor. Will this boat sink or swim?

This article, from the Illustrated London News of 28 October 1882 comes courtesy of John Weedy at www.iln.org.uk. The subject is the first electric boat to be sailed in the UK. It was designed by the brilliant Austrian-born electrical engineer Anthony Reckenzaun and built by the Electrical Power Storage Company (EPS) of Millwall, East London. Its launch was at 3.30 on a Thursday afternoon exactly a month before the report appeared. The boat carried four men the EPS works to London Bridge. Two were the French electrical engineers Ernest Volckmar and Gustave Phillipart who, with the Englishman, John Scudamore Sellon, had done much to develop the batteries which were used in the launch. The third man present was Hugo Hirst, who was at the time an employee of EPS, the manufacturers of the batteries, but who later become head of the General Electric Company. The fourth man on board – and perhaps the only one who could be called a passenger – was Silvanus Phillips Thompson FRS...

Udvar-Hazy | Nakajima J1N1-S Gekko (Moonlight) IRVING: Originally designed as a three-seat, daylight escort fighter plane by the Nakajima Aeroplane Company, Ltd., and flown in 1941, the IRVING was modified as a night fighter in May of 1943 and shot down two American B-17 bombers to prove its capability. The Gekko (meaning moonlight) was redesigned to hold only two crewmen so that an upward firing gun could be mounted where the observer once sat. Nearly five hundred J1N1 aircraft, including prototypes, escort, reconnaissance, and night fighters were built during World War II. A sizeable number were also used as Kamikaze aircraft in the Pacific. The few that survived the war were scrapped by the Allies. This J1N1 is the last remaining in the world. It was transported from Japan to the U.S. where it was flight tested by the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1946. The...
