In 1977, Gerry Spiess began building a 10-foot plywood-and-fiberglass sailboat in his garage in White Bear Lake. Spiess, a technical instructor at 3M Co. , had designed and built other boats and was an experienced sailor. He had sailed down the Mississippi River and crossed the Gulf of Mexico to South America. But two attempts to sail around the world were scuttled by illness and bad weather. He designed the new boat, “Yankee Girl,” to set a world record as the smallest to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The 750-pound vessel was equipped with four sails (main, two jibs and a spinnaker), a 14-foot aluminum mast, a self-steering mechanism, a VHF radio, navigational gear, a 4-horse Evinrude outboard motor and 60 gallons of fuel. Without a soul to see him off, Spiess set sail from Virginia Beach, Va. , on June 1, 1979. The little sloop was loaded with provisions, including beef jerky he and his wife, Sally, had made in their kitchen. To stave off boredom and loneliness on the 3,800-mile journey, he packed books by Mark Twain and recordings of old radio programs. One of his regrets: He did not bring a good pillow. In 54 days at sea, he survived close encounters with a passing ship, a school of whales and a circling shark. Pounded at times by 20-foot waves and 40-knot winds, Yankee Girl was a speck on the ocean, barely visible on radar. For one 17-day stretch, he had no contact with the outside world. “If anything had happened to me during that time,” he later wrote, “no one would have known in what area of that gigantic ocean I was. Thousands of well-wishers greeted Spiess upon his arrival in Falmouth, England. “I did have some bad moments, but I’m absolutely delighted to have made it at last,” he told reporters. “I wouldn’t do it again, or advise anybody to do it. The first two weeks were sheer hell. Instead, two years later, the White Bear Lake sailor climbed aboard Yankee Girl and set out to conquer the Pacific Ocean. He made the 7,800-mile crossing , from Long Beach, Calif. , to Sydney, Australia, in 153 days. His tough little boat was donated to the Minnesota Historical Society in 1984. From the Minneapolis Star:. Minneapolis Star Staff Writers. Sally Spiess visited her husband, Gerry, early this morning. Spiess, 39, White Bear Lake, was about to set a world record by completing an Atlantic crossing in a 10-foot boat, the smallest ever to complete the voyage. Spiess appeared in good health, despite being swept overboard in the early days of his voyage. Spiess was in a pilot boat off the Falmouth, England, harbor when she got her first glance at Gerry in 54 days. He set sail June 1 from Virginia Beach, Va. , in “Yankee Girl,” the boat he designed and built in his White Bear Lake garage. United Press International reported that Spiess edged Yankee Girl close to the towering 40-foot Falmouth pilot launch Link, to talk to his wife and his parents, Louis and Jeanette Spiess of St. Paul. His mother looked down into Yankee Girl and said, “Let me congratulate you. Your housekeeping looks superb, the boat looks clean and tidy – you must have had a nice trip. Spiess, sporting a beard after his long trip, gave a tired smile, and said, “That’s only half of it. The first two weeks were sheer hell. Spiess said 20-foot waves had pounded his boat creating “valleys in the ocean which almost enveloped us. ”. He said he was swept overboard one day early in the voyage. I gave a tremendous pull and managed to haul myself back on board Yankee Girl. I knew I had to make it back to the boat. Spiess told The Star in a telephone interview that although she was concerned for her husband’s safety throughout the trip, “I was eased by the fact that I know the man that build that boat and the years of effort and study he put into its... He looks fine, she said. “He’s grown a beard since I last saw him. He’s lost a little weight – in fact he’s thinner than I’ve ever seen him. “I’m sure he’s looking forward to stepping on land. Plans for the future are “completely up in the air at this point,” she said. “We’ll stay in England for a week to 10 days. A flotilla of boats flying the U. S. flag and blowing horns flocked around Spiess’s boat about a mile from shore at 11 a. m. today. Residents of Falmouth were preparing a gala reception for Spiess at the Royal Yacht.

Plywood Sailboat Plans

The Footy is a very small (usually) radio-control sailboat whose length is a mere 12 inches (30.5 cm). The hull can be made from a fiberglass mold or simply with thin sheets of plywood fitted together. Two servos are used, one to control the sail and one for the rudder. ==History== Magazine]]". The plans were reprinted in "Model Boats" magazine in 1975 and was perhaps the influence for the well known British model yacht designer Roger Stollery to produce his "Choppa" design for his son Peter shortly after. In 1981 Brett McCormack of New Zealand saw a picture of "Choppa" in "Model Boats" magazine and was inspired to design a 12 inch yacht for a school technical drawing project. Much later, in 1996, he actually built the design as a free sailing model for his 2 year old son. In 2000 Richard Web came up with the idea of the Footy class as a radio controlled yacht to sail on the pool at Weymouth Sailing Week. The class spread around the world with the "Ancient Mariners" in Auckland, New Zealand, building and racing scale type Footys. In 2001 Brett McCormack redesigned his 12 inch model and adapted it to radio control – the famous Bobabout design. Over the next four years the class

After spending time and burning Teak remnants for what was suppose to be veneers for four boats, I conclude that my efforts to make a plank deck will not yield even one deck for this Pirate R class boat. "Learning" is the goal and I am doing just that. These deck halves will be used on a smaller boat and the R boat will receive a 1/8" plywood deck just at the plans have called for.

The Thunderbird class sailboat was designed in 1958 by Seattle Washington naval architect Ben Seaborn, in response to a request from the Douglas Fir Plywood Association (now APA - The Engineered Wood Association) of Tacoma, Washington for design proposals for a sailboat that would "... be both a racing and cruising boat; provide sleeping accommodations for four crew; be capable of being built by reasonably skilled amateurs; provide auxiliary power by an outboard motor that could be easily removed and stowed; and out-perform other sailboats in its class." More than 35 years of experience and construction of more than 1,250 Thunderbirds around the world have demonstrated that the 25.90-foot (7.89 m) Thunderbird class sailboat is a success on all accounts.
