Epic Big Island adventures: Volcanoes, rain forest and manta rays - Marin Independent Journal

The realization hits you the moment you approach the Big Island, your plane banking to land on an airstrip in the middle of a 19th-century volcanic flow. Rain forests and coffee plantations break up the near-lunar look of this primordial island, where sculpted rivers of lava -- smooth pahoehoe and jagged a'a -- cover so much of the landscape. Our first night on the Big Island, as we sipped wine and toasted a spectacular sunset from a hotel terrace on the Kona coast, we'd thought this a mere vacation. and pondering how an entire, 6-inch diameter pineapple slice had made its way inside our mai tais. The Big Island is not a particularly beachy place. Its resorts are built on volcanic cliffs, and the few sandy shores require a bit of a hike. So when you hear that Huggo's on the Rocks in Kailua-Kona, for example, is a toes-in-the-sand beach bar, understand that the sand has been trucked in and deposited on a terrace. (How they wedge an entire pineapple cross-section into a cocktail glass is a bit of a mystery, but the mai tais are mighty tasty. You can ride a vintage, double-hulled Polynesian sailboat into the sunset -- or hop from its low, wooden deck into the warm waters of Keauhou Bay and watch giant manta rays do barrel rolls in the moonlight, rendering your snorkel irrelevant. Intrepid adventurers will find the distances vast, the landscape rugged and the island relatively untouristed. It's a place of mystery, majesty and myth, the creation of the fire goddess Pele, the birthplace of King Kamehameha and the site of bloody battles and death-defying athletics. There are the remnants of a mile-long holua here, a volcanic rock slide that Hawaiian nobles used to ride, using sleds to shoot down the slippery surface at breakneck speeds during the Makahiki games. It doesn't get more intrepid than Olympic-caliber volcano-riding. Of course, no one's suggesting that we go lava sledding now, but a pilgrimage to the land of Pele is definitely in order. Early the next morning, we're headed for Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, 30 miles southwest of Hilo, by what feels like the most round-about means possible. There's no terribly direct route from the Kona Coast to this UNESCO World Heritage Site, which became a national park more than 50 years before Hawaii became a state. Still, we're aboard a nicely air-conditioned van heading to the northern end of the island to pick up a few more passengers, before crossing the newly finished Saddle Road that connects the coasts between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea -- ears popping as... It's a great way to see the island, but it's long. our small group will sleep the entire ride back, leaving the driving to our Hawaii Forest & Trails guide. Inside the park, we traverse trails that cut across ancient -- and not-so-ancient -- lava beds, where trees take on strange sculptural forms, mere shells of themselves, and the difference between types of flow is crystal clear. "The pahoehoe looks like the smoothly rippled surface of brownies," our guide says, "the a'a like crumbled Oreos. A trail descends from lush rain forest into a lava tube, a dimly lit, otherworldly tunnel formed by lava as the surface cooled faster than the flow beneath. And we make a stop at the Jaggar Museum, where exhibits explain the science and myths behind Hawaii's volcanoes. In this museum high above her fiery home, Pele gazes down from a mural, her hair curling about her shoulders like pahoehoe. This national park on the southern end of the Big Island is open 24 hours a day, year-round. The Kilauea visitors center is open from 9 a. m. -5 p. m. , and the Jaggar Museum is open from 10 a. m. -8 p. m. The park will celebrate its centennial in 2016 with a series of special centennial hikes, After Dark in the Park programs and other...

Powerwinch Capstan 1000 Winch

(Tackle Direct)

Price: $674.99

CapstansWhy Capstans?Rather than using the hand-over-hand method of retrieving lines, the capstan offers a mechanical advantage that is both faster and safer. The capstan does the heavy lifting with only a small amount of effort. The maximum speed of the line retrieval depends on the rotational speed of the drum. The benefit is that the retrieval speed can be adjusted by decreasing the tension on the retrieved line, maintaining control over a very heavy load with little effort. This useful device, which has been around since the early days of sailing, is still used today. Recreational fishermen, like commercial fishermen, use these for hauling crab and lobster pots and there are many other uses aboard boats. The few mechanical parts and ease of use have made this a favorite of fisherman worldwide. While chains should NEVER be wrapped around a drum, the majority of lines can be handled on a capstan.A capstan, typically operated by an easy to use footswitch (shown above), allows the boater to control lines with ease without having additional crew members. Powerwinch has a model to fit your needs. All Powerwinch capstans come with a foot control switch that allows for hands-free operation. The International Laser Class sailboat, also called Laser Standard and the Laser One is a popular one-design class of small sailing dinghy. According the Laser Class Rules the boat may be sailed by either one or two people, though it is rarely sailed by two. The design, by Bruce Kirby, emphasizes simplicity and performance. The dinghy is manufactured by independent companies in different parts of the world, including Laser Performance Europe (Americas and Europe), Performance Sailcraft Australia (Oceania) and Performance Sailcraft Japan.
The Laser is one of the most popular single-handed dinghies in the world. As of 2011, there are more than 250,000 boats worldwide. A commonly cited reason for its popularity is that it is robust, simple to rig and sail. The Laser also provides very competitive racing due to the very tight class association controls which eliminate differences in hull, sails and equipment.
The term "Laser" is often used to refer to the Laser Standard (the largest of the sail plan rigs available for the Laser hull). However there are two other sail plan rigs available for the Laser Standard hull and a series of other "Laser"-branded boats which are of a completely

Part of the port town of Oban, as seen from the Caledonian-MacBrayne ferry returning to Oban from the isle of Mull in the inner Hebrides. The Colosseum-esue McCaig’s Tower looks down over the town from Battery Hill, with the Columba Hotel on the waterfront. The stack of the Oban Distillery, and a bit of the distillery itself, is visible on the right. This was a return to Oban of a different sort, too. My wife and I spent our first rainy night in Scotland on our first trip there nearly 20 years ago at the Columba Hotel in Oban, in one of the turret rooms, while waves crashed into the pier from the storm. We had gone there so that I could pay a visit to the distillery, in no small part because I had given my groomsmen monogrammed flasks filled with Oban 14 when we got married. Amazingly, we completely missed McCaig’s Tower on that trip–didn’t even realize it was there until we were watching some Scotland travel programs while planning our most recent trip! This trip, we stayed...

ocean nova sailboat harbor boat sailing atlantic scotia halifax rigging ketch elderhostel

Both the yawl and the ketch have two masts, with the main mast foremost. On classic yacht types with long overhangs and inboard rudders, the distinction is simple: a ketch has the mizzen mast forward of the rudder post, whereas on a yawl, it is aft of the rudder post.[1][2] For boats with shorter overhangs or outboard rudders the distinction is more usefully determined by comparing the purposes and relative sizes of the mizzens. Compared to a ketch, a similar size yawl's mizzen sail is much smaller than the main, and is usually situated very far aft, behind the helm station. On a ketch, the principal purpose of the mizzen sail is to help propel the vessel as part of the working sail, the sail area being split up between two masts to ease handling. On a yawl, the smaller mizzen mainly serves the purposes of trim and balance, working more as an "air rudder" or trim tab than as a substantial part of the working sail. Yawls tend to have mainsails almost as large as those of...
